Swelling During Pregnancy

You are 24 weeks pregnant, you have a fancy event to attend. You put on that nice dress then go to slip your feet into those tinny heals that just fit last week. THEY DON'T FIT. Why?

It is a very common occurrence during pregnancy called Edema. It is caused by the build up of additional blood and fluids needed to soften the body so it can expand as baby grows. It is often experienced in the face, feet, hands, legs, and ankles. If you experience facial swelling and puffiness in the eyes please consult your doctor or midwife, this may be a sign of Preeclampsia.

Ways to avoid swelling or reduce it are. Avoid long periods of standing sitting in one position. Take a short walk every 1-2 hours. Kick up your feet. place some books or bricks under your mattress at the foot of your bed to elevate legs. Sleep on your side, and change positions frequently. Drink between 8-10 cups of water daily, and limit daily salt intake. Avoid tight sock, and wear comfy shoes.

After baby is born the swelling should gradually go away. your body will be yours again, and you will be able to wear those shoes once again.
