Why A Doula

What is a Doula?

This may be a question you are asking your self right now. A Doula is a trained labour coach. They assist you during your labour and delivery. They provide you with continuous emotional support, as well as assists with non medical aspect of your care.

What Does a Doula Do

  • Uses comfort techniques: breathing, relaxation, message, movement, and positioning

  • Provides emotional support

  • gives information

  • continuously reassures, comforts, and encourages mother and father.

  • keep the family informed about birth choices

  • is an advocate for the mother, and provides communication between mother and care provider.

  • looks after the spouse as well, allows him time to go to the bathroom, grab a bite to eat. take a small rest

Finding a Doula

Finding the right Doula for you is very important. If there is no bond or connection, then most likely they wont be much help when it comes time for labour to begin. Here is a list of some question you can ask the Doula.

What training have you attended?

What services do you provide?

What are your fees?

Are you available for my due date?

What made you deiced to become a Doula?

Would you be able to meet with me before the due date to go over my birth plan?

What happens if you can't get to my birth?

Fathers Role

It isn't the intention of the Doula to take over the father/partners role. They are there to show them how to use the proper comfort techniques for the mother. At the end of the day it is the father/partner that the mother wants to share this day with.
